What we do: Awash Wines is Ethiopia’s longest established wine maker and understands the cultural fabric of the country. The company was established in 1956. In September 2013, 8 Miles LLP, a private equity fund focused on African development and Mulugeta Tesfakiros, a local entrepreneur became shareholders in the company.

Ownership & Management: Awash Wines is owned by group of shareholders which are 8 Miles LLC (UK private equity firm), Mulugeta Tesfakiros (entrepreneur). In July 2013, a partnership led by 8 Miles acquired a 100% interest in Awash Wines from the Ethiopian Privatization and Public Enterprises Supervising Agency. The company has been in operation since 1956.

Key financial indicators: Not provided. Awash Wines is a well-known brand with international grape varieties such as Petite Sirah, Chenin Blanc as well as the native Dodoma variety. All these grapes are grown on the 520 hectare site outside of Addis Abba. Track record: Awash produces and sells wines to hotels, restaurants, bars and supermarkets across Ethiopia. Its brands such as Awash, Gouder, Axumit and Kemila are household names in Ethiopia.
