What we do: Rail2Rail (Pty) Ltd provides an all-African solution to the upgrade of the rail network in South Africa. The company has to date provided more than a million sleepers to Transnet Freight Rail which are used for the maintenance of South Africa’s 22,000km freight railway network system. Rail2Rail has a license agreement with Rail One GmbH, one of the largest sleeper producers in Germany and Europe. Rail One GmbH has nine production plants all over the world. Rail2Rail was established in 2007 and has managed its contract with Transnet proficiently.

Ownership & Management: Rail2Rail was owned and managed by its directors which have the majority shareholding with the remaining being a BEE shareholding. The company has a level 4 BEE status. The board meets at least three times a year and is actively involved in the development of strategy and long term vision of Rail2Rail, as well as providing high level support for the operational management team.

Rail2Rail’s manufacturing facilities are designed specifically for the production of pre-stressed concrete railway sleepers utilise the following technological principles: carousel system with quadruple moulds, late de-moulding system and pre-stressing of the sleepers with profiled steel wires or rods. The manufacturing process of each sleeper is organized around a non-stop carousel system operation, featuring a continuous, closed cycle. The railway sleepers are manufactured according to Transnet’s specifications.

Track record: Rail2Rail has to date provided more than a million sleepers to Transnet Freight Rail which are used for the maintenance of South Africa’s 22,000km freight railway network system. Rail2Rail has the capacity to produce about 350,000 sleepers every year. Rail 2 Rail secured the contract with Transnet after applying to Transnet Freight Rail to participate in the rail corporation’s Competitive Supplier Development Programme for concrete sleeper producers.
